About The Project

I think of my recent work as investigations into the forces that form cities. If Manhattan has the grid as its matrix, then Berlin has its walls. These structures (the medieval wall, the fortification, the tax wall, the revolutionary and military walls, the S-bahn ring as a wall, and the Berlin wall) acted as events on the city, but with lasting effects on architecture and urbanism.
This research has yielded a publication of around 70 drawings with texts in English and German. It is published by Archive Books and signed copies can be bought on the support page. The publication was made possible by a Kickstarter campaign.
This research and work has been done in parallel with collaborative projects which can be viewed on my website. The project has been featured at Ignite Berlin and on the Deutsche Welle.

About Me: Anna Kostreva
During the day, I work as an architect. Berlin: A Morphology of Walls is a personal project that I have been working on in my free time for about three years. I am originally from South Carolina, but since living in London when I was 16, fell in love with big cities. I went to school at Cooper Union in New York City, did a Fulbright research project in Johannesburg, South Africa, and now have continued my passion for urban analysis in Berlin, Germany. I see this personal project as a great way to learn about and feel part of the world around me and I want to share that with others.
